In 1957 Erleen Janicek, a mother of 4 young boys, started Janicek Insurance Agency, Inc. in a one-room office in Smiley, Texas and became the first female agent in South Texas for The Hartford Insurance Company. For almost 50 years she has served the Smiley community's insurance and tax needs. In 1985, her son Donnie took over the business, and he continues to operate it today. In 1993, the company expanded, acquiring an independent agency in Stockdale, Texas. And again in 1995, with the addition of an agency in Nixon, Texas.
